moonlit clouds
pulling shadows
over a mountainthat night there was a great deal of snow that fell on the mountains not to far from my apartment. as I sat by the window the clouds parted somewhat and the moonlight shone about. it seemed as if the clouds were pulling shadows over the mountains. at the same time the shadows of my mind were parting.
Haiku is one of the most important forms of traditional japanese poetry. Literally means "starting verse", and was the first starting link of a much longer chain of verses known as haika. Because the haiku set the tone for the rest of the poetic chain, it enjoyed a privileged position in haiku poetry, and it was not uncommon for a poet to compose a haiku by itself without following up with the rest of the chain.
